Dental eruption and caries activity: its a risk factor in adolescents?

Objectives: Objective: Describe the behavior of the lesions in occlusal surfaces of the second permanent molars, its distribution and severity, in adolescents, and relate ir with the state of eruption and the presence of activity in the rest of de oral cavity.
Methods: Methods: a descriptive study (n=100) of both sexes was made, with the age of 13,39±0,94 years. The clinical examination was made for two examiners calibrated, where register state of eruption of molars and diagnosis of caries according to the criteria of Maltz and Barbachan on all dental surfaces, as well as its description on the occlusal surface of the second molars according to the anatomical sites of Carvalho.
It was also used structured questionnaires on habits, type of oral health assistance, socioeconomic and demographic level.
Results: Results: the prevalence of caries lesions was 98%. 82% of adolescents presented active
lesions of caries. 70% only have non-cavitated active lesions in the second molars in
eruption.
The most prevalent lesions were active non-cavitated lesions and their most frequent location was the occlusal surface of the second molars.
Conclusions: Conclusions: the active eruption of molars means an age of risk for people that should
be considered when prioritizing and establishing oral health programs.
The decrease in the prevalence of dental caries disease has changed the profile of this disease in populations with adequate access to fluoride measures.
The slowing of the progression of lesions with long periods between the starts of the lesion and cavitation requires new methods of the diagnosis and treatment processes.
