Evaluation of cone angle variation and bacterial leakage in internal conical connection implants. In-vitro study.

Objectives: To evaluate the variability in cone angle and micro-leakage of Escherichia coli in the implant-abutment interface of conical internal connection implants in unloaded conditions.
Methods: Ten implant systems (n=5 samples of each) were divided in two groups: (1) Ankylos and (2) Neodent, they were comprised of fixtures with internal cone connection that connected to standard abutments. The research was done in two steps: First, samples were characterized using the focal variation equipment (Infinite Focus G5-Alicona) to obtain the cone angle of the implants and abutments by group and ten repetitions within each sample. Second, implants and abutments were assembled and submerged in bacterial solution of Escherichia coli under unloaded conditions. After disconnection of implant systems, samples were taken from the inner part of the implant, and bacterial microleakage was evaluated by spectrophotometry and colony forming units and confirmed with Gram stain. A completely randomized variance analysis was performed with subsampling using software R.
Results: The average of implant cone angle was 5,73° in group 1 and 5,82° in group 2. Ankylos implants showed less variation in cone angle in both group and repetitions (p <0.05). In regard to micro-leakage, one sample in group 2 showed one unit forming colony while group 1 no microfiltration occurred, however, no statistically significant differences were found between the two groups (p> 0.05).
Conclusions: There are differences in the variation of cone angle between Ankylos and Neodent.Ankylos implants showed the least variation.
Ankylos and Neodent implants can prevent the leakage of E. coli under unloading conditions.
