EFFECTIVENESS OF AN EXPERIMENTAL BIOMIMETIC REMINERALIZING SUBSTANCE ON TOOTH BLEACHING: A PRELIMINARY STUDY

Objectives: To evaluate color changes and whiteness variations of human enamel after using an experimental biomimetic remineralizing substance (EBRS)
Methods: Forty human molars randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 10): G1- control group; G2- treated with hydrogen peroxide 35% (PH35); G3- treated with EBRS; G4: treated with PH35 + EBRS. A dental spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade Compact), which was previously calibrated, was used to obtain CIELAB color coordinates. CIELAB (ΔEab) and CIEDE2000 (ΔE00) color differences and whiteness index for dentistry (WID) before and after bleaching treatments were calculated for each group. Perceptibility (PT) and acceptability (AT) thresholds were used to analyze color differences (PT = 1.22 and AT = 2.66 for ΔEab and PT = 0.81 and AT = 1.77 for ΔE00 ) and whiteness variations (PT = 0.61 and AT = 1.90 for ΔWID ). The data was analyzed using ANOVA (α=0.05) and simple linear regression.
Results: G3 showed the lowest mean values ΔL and delta Δb of and (-3.64 and -1.10) and the greatest mean values of Δa (0.67), when compared with other groups (p≤0.05). All groups showed color differences ( ΔEab and ΔE00 ) above AT values and G3 showed the greatest value (p≤0.05). All groups showed negative values of WID but below AT for WID, being G3 the greatest (-2.21).

Conclusions: The bleaching treatment using the experimental biomimetic remineralizing substance showed the greatest color difference for human enamel. In addition, although the greatest whiteness variation of human enamel was found using this substance, it would be below the acceptability threshold.
