“Perceptions of Periodontal Diseases Among Adolescents in Nablus City: a Qualitative Study”

Objectives: To explore perceptions of periodontal health and illness and to examine attitudes and beliefs regarding the prevention of gum diseases among Palestinian adolescents.
Methods: A qualitative research approach was followed, and the theoretical framework was based on the phenomenology structure. Multi-stage purposeful sampling technique was used to select interviewees. A criterion sampling strategy and an intensity sample approach were used in selecting periodontal cases. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted, and the questions were based on key topics from the literature. The interviews varied in length from 45 to 60 minutes. A total of 25 interviews were conducted in August 2023, and each interview was tape-recorded.
Results: This study found that adolescents lack the necessary (perceptions) understanding related to periodontal diseases, and they were not aware of gingival inflammation and did not understand the progression and impact of periodontal diseases.
Conclusions: Teenagers were unable to take the necessary preventive measures to protect their gums and other oral structures.
