Patients’ level of awareness and expectations about dental implants: scoping review of survey-based studies

Objectives: Recently, the number of dental implants (DIs) inserted yearly worldwide is estimated to be close to a million. Successful DI treatment not only depends on the practitioner’s skills and knowledge but also depends on patients’ knowledge, their expectations, and compliance. However, many articles were published regarding this topic using different questionnaires and were done in different countries.
Thus, this scoping review aims to assess the public awareness and expectations regarding DIs. It also aims to identify areas of lack of knowledge for future clinical implementation, and to improve public awareness and attitude.
Methods: Scopus and PubMed were used to search for survey-based articles that are written in the English language until 30th of April 2023. The inclusion of the studies was based on the PCC framework as recommended by JBI as Population: Studies that included the general population. Concept: DI awareness, knowledge, and expectations. Context: Survey based studies without limitations regarding the setting or location.
Results: 51 papers were retrieved and selected for STROBE assessment. STROBE items fulfillment for each article ranged from 5-19 out of 22 items. Important items showed very low fulfillment % (0-5%). Out of the 51 articles, 39 recruited patients with no previous history of implant placement. Five recruited patients with previous implant treatment, and seven recruited both patients’ categories. Articles were published in both developed and developing countries, while 30% of them were published in India. Only 26 articles reported their funding status. Seven articles were funded by their institution, 2 from an implant company.
Conclusions: The preliminary data reported poor adherence to the STROBE guidelines. Findings showed that journal editors and reviewers should consider strict adherence to proper reporting guidelines. This improves reporting quality and reduces funds and time waste.
