Layering and staining technique used in fixed prosthodontics

Objectives: To compare between layering and staining techniques used in fixed prosthodontics in term of esthetics, shade matching, translucency and cost.
Objectives1: To compare esthetic between the two techniques of three cases.
Objective 2: To compare cost between the two techniques of three cases.
Objective 3: To compare time needed between the two techniques.
Objective 4: To compare two different kits of stanning technique.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey study and three clinical cases were conducted in this research. Twenty-three participants (14 dental technologists and 9 dentists) completed the cross-sectional questionnaire. The questionnaire included 10 questions related to knowledge of the technologists and dentists about layering and staining techniques in terms of techniques’ ease of use, cost, aesthetics, translucency, and shade matching with natural teeth. The three clinical cases conducted were fractured upper central incisors patient (1); non- vital upper left lateral incisor (patient 2); and non- vital upper left central incisor with old PFM crown (patient 3).
Results: Our results showed that 78% of all participants preferred layering technique in terms of aesthetics and translucency. Furthermore, 56% of all participants preferred staining technique in terms of shade matching. In addition, 87% of the participants agreed that staining technique is less expensive when compared to the layering technique. The clinical cases were treated following either of these techniques. The full crowns were manufactured from zirconia and the veneer from lithium dissilicate ingot.
Conclusions: Layering technique is the best in terms of esthetics and translucency, staining technique is the best in terms of shade matching and cost.
