Self-Perceived Dental Aesthetic Impact on Social and Academic Performance Of Dental Students In Jordan
Objectives: The purpose of this research was to assess the effects of self-reported perception of facial and dental aesthetics on academic and social performance among dental students in Jordan. Methods: Cross-sectional surveys were collected from 371 dental students distributed between the two dental schools in Jordan. The survey had five sections: socio-demographics, level of self-satisfaction of facial and dental aesthetic characters, the presence or absence of factors that compromise dental aesthetics, Psychological Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ) and information about academic scores and academic satisfaction. Results: Results showed that 53% of students reported seeking treatment to enhance their aesthetic looks and around 65% reported they would seek dental treatments to enhance their appearance in the future. The results showed that facial and dental aesthetics had an impact on the social and academic performance of dental students in Jordan. Students who had factors that compromise their dental aesthetic appearance reported low levels of confidence when speaking and communicating with other people (p value = 0.019), and low levels of satisfaction with overall academic performance (p value = 0.018). Conclusions: Social and academic performance of dental students in Jordan were found to be significantly influenced by the aesthetic quality of their facial and dental features. Teeth size, colour and alignment were the main factors affecting students’ perception of their own success as dental students or future dentists, and their overall satisfaction with their academic journey.
