THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE PERCEPTION OF BLACK TRIANGLES APPEARANCE, PERSONALITY FACTORS, AND THE LEVEL OF EDUCATION

Objectives: To evaluate the perception of black triangles and examine the relationship between the perception of black triangles, personality factors, and the different educational backgrounds.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on a total sample of 435 individuals divided into four groups: dentists, clinical (4th and 5th year) dental students, pre-clinical (3rd year) dental students, and laypeople. Participants rated the attractiveness of the upper and lower smile profiles using a ten-point numerical scale with 0 being the least, and 10 being the most attractive smile profile. Also, their personality factor was assessed using the Arabic version of the NEO-FFI which assesses the five major personality factors: Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness.
Results: The smile profile with multiple large black triangles scored the lowest for the upper and lower tested profiles (mean score = 3.6 and 3.9 respectively). The smile profile without black triangles had the highest scores for the upper and the lower tested profiles (mean score = 9.1 and 8.8 respectively). The dental professionals had lower scores (Mean = 3.43, SD = 2.18) for the least attractive upper smile profile (multiple large black triangles) (t = -2.715, p = .007) than the non-dental participants (Mean = 4.08, SD = 2.24). Openness personality trait contributed positively to the perception scores of the most attractive upper smile profile (without black triangles) among the total sample (β = .121, p =.013), while the Agreeableness personality trait contributed positively to the perception scores of the most attractive lower smile profile (without black triangles) among the pre-clinical dental students (β = .414, p = <.001).
Conclusions: For the tested upper and lower smile profiles, the smile profile with multiple large black triangles was the least attractive, while the smile profile without black triangles was the most attractive. The dental professionals were more critical in their assessment of black triangles than the non-dental participants. Furthermore, all the five personality factors were related to the perception of the smile profiles, and Neuroticism, Openness, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness could predict the perception of the black triangles impacts on smile attractiveness.
