Prevalence of canine guidance, group function guidance and the co-incidence of centric relation (CR) position to maximum inter-cuspation position (MI) in Jordanian population.
Objectives: Dental occlusion is an essential component of any successful restorative procedure. The objectives of this study are to identify the percentage of Jordanian population who has bilateral canine guidance and coincident centric relation with maximum inter-cuspation, and to check if the percentages are in agreement with what is published in the literature. Methods: 400 subjects (36.8% males and 63.3% females; ,77.9% between the age of 20-29) with complete natural permanent dentition were recruited for this study. The static and dynamic occlusion of each subject were assessed by intraoral chairside examination, while subjects are seated in upright position, using magnification loops (X 2.5), light, examination set and shimstock. Chi-square test was used to compare the proportion of different occlusal characteristics. Results: 52.3% of the examined subjects had a class I incisal relationship, 44.1% had a class II incisal relationship and 0.3% had a class III incisal relationship. Class I molar and canine relationship were the most dominant occlusal scheme (73-80%), followed by class II and then class III. Subjects who got orthodontic treatment have less incidence of class III molar and canine relationship. Canine guidance both on right and left lateral movements was reported in 51.0%, and group function guidance on both sides was recorded in 32.4%. The coincidence of MI and CR was recorded in 29.9% of those who did not have any orthodontic treatment and 30.1% in those who have orthodontic treatment. There was a significant relationship between the type of guidance and the presence of interferences on the working side. Conclusions: Higher percentage of canine guidance and more coincidence between CR and MI are found in Jordanian population compared to what is reported in the literature.
