Correlation of dimensional parameters of anterior maxilla: a cone beam computed tomographic study
Objectives: To evaluate the facial and palatal alveolar bone plates, the distance between the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) and the facial alveolar bone crest (BC), the sagittal angulation, and the buccal bone concavity angle of maxillary anterior teeth Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on patients attending the dentistry department in the Jordan University Hospital from 2015 to 2022. More than 1000 CBCT scans were viewed and only CBCTs of patients aged ≥ 18 years old and which involved maxillary anterior teeth with bone crest bone level of ≤ 3mm from CEJ were included. CBCTs were excluded when signs of concurrent orthodontic treatment, scattering and distortion due to motion, metalic restorations and/or implants were found and teeth were excluded due to the existence of signs of periapical bone resorption, tooth surface loss, endodontic fillings, root resorption, veneers, full crowns, and/or rotated teeth. The studied parameters were the facial and palatal bone thicknesses at three levels: coronal, mid-root, and apical levels, the distance between the CEJ and facial BC, the sagittal angulation, and the buccal bone concavity angle of maxillary anterior teeth. Means and standard deviations were obtained for all the studied variables and parametric tests were used to assess the statistical differences based on gender, age, and the tooth side. Results: One hundred and twelve CBCT scans were included and only 502 teeth had recieved the measurments. The included CBCTs were for 79 women and 33 men with a mean age of 31.10 years old (18-71 years old). The mean value of the thickness of the facial bone wall of maxillary anteriot teeth was 1.05±0.31 mm and of the palatal bone wall was 4.03±12 mm. The mean value of the distance of CEJ-BC for maxillary anterior teeth varied between 1.65±0.56 and 1.72±0.56 mm. The mean values of the sagittal angulation of the central, lateral incisors, and canines were 8.70±5.09°, 7.86±5.15°, and 12.23±4.3°, respectively. The buccal bone concavity angles of the central, lateral incisors, and canines had mean values of 154±14.6°, 152±9.33°, and 158±7.7°, respectively. Conclusions: The facial bone plate of the anterior maxilla is thin (< 1.5 mm). The distance of CEJ-BC varied between 1 and 2 mm. Maxillary anterior teeth tend to be buccally positioned and with curved labial plate.
