OCCUPATIONAL BURNOUT, AND IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON PEDIATRIC DENTISTS IN JORDAN. A CROSS SECTIONAL STUDY

Objectives: To assess the occupational burnout, and the impact of COVID-19 on pediatric dentists in Jordan
Methods: A cross-sectional study among active registered pediatric dentists at the Jordanian Dental Association (JDA), recorded responses of 92 out of 140 pediatric dentists who were directly approached, using a structured questionnaire that included Maslach burnout inventory- Human services survey (MBI-HSS). Data were entered and analyzed using IBM’s SPSS version 25. Significance of the statistical test was set at P<0.05.
Results: Respondents’ ages ranged between 27-69 years. The majority were females. Among the participants, 40.2% had high level in the EE-domain, 16.3% in the Dep-domain, and 45.7% in the PA-domain. Males had higher mean of Dep than females (P=0.005), those practicing in the capital-city had lower mean EE than others (P=0.007), exclusively practicing pediatric dentistry had lower mean Dep than those who did not (P=0.038), Private sector practitioners had lower mean EE than who are at MOH (P=0.024). Significant correlation was found between EE-score and the number of patients seen daily (P=0.026). Also, between PA-score with age (P=0.048), and years of experience (P=0.043). Dep-score had a significant correlation with COVID-19 Impact score (P=0.008).
Conclusions: Domains of burnout showed high prevalence among pediatric dentists. Males had higher mean-Dep than females. Participants who practice in the capital city had a lower mean-EE than others. Exclusively practicing pediatric dentistry showed lower mean-Dep score than those who did not. Private sector practitioners had lower mean-EE score than who practice at MOH. Significant correlations were found between EE-score with number of patients seen daily, PA-score with age, and years of experience. Also, Dep-score with COVID-19 Impact score.
