Efficacy of a cetylpyridinium chloride mouthrinse for gingivitis
Objectives: The aim of the present investigation was to assess anti-plaque and anti-gingivitis benefits of a cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) mouthrinse with anti-inflammatory agents compared with a placebo mouthrinse during the course of a 12-week trial.
Methods: This study was a randomized, placebo-controlled, double blind, parallel groups, multi-center clinical trial. Eighty-eight generally healthy adults with gingivitis were enrolled in this study. Subjects received a scaling at 2 weeks prior to baseline, and then they were randomly assigned to either a CPC mouthrinse or a placebo mouthrinse. Subjects received a cleaning of their tooth surfaces at baseline after clinical measurements. Then they were instructed to begin rinsing twice a day with 10 ml of their assigned mouthrinse for 20 seconds after brushing for 12 weeks. Clinical measurements were performed at baseline, 6 and 12 weeks using the Turesky Modified Quigley-Hein Plaque Index (QHI), the Modified Gingival Index (MGI) and probing pocket depth (PD).
Results: Of the 88 subjects enrolled in the study, 77 subjects were available at the study endpoint. No significant differences in the mean QHI, MGI and PD were detected between groups at baseline. The mean QHI, MGI and PD had been reduced from baseline to 12 weeks in each group. After 12 weeks, QHI, MGI and PD of the test and placebo group were 1.89 vs 2.23 (P<0.05), 1.11 vs 1.33 (P<0.05) and 2.14 vs 2.27 (P=0.086), respectively.
Conclusions: This clinical study demonstrated that the cetylpyridinium chloride mouthrinse with anti-inflammatory agents provided significant anti-plaque and anti-gingivitis benefits when used twice daily for 12 weeks.
