Investigation of observation system for root canal with image fiber
Objectives: In the present study, we aimed to develop a novel diagnostic device with high resolution to detect fine structures inside a tooth and in periodontal pockets. Methods: Resolutions of various optical fibers were analyzed in both air (Refractive index=1) and water (Refractive index=1.3) using the image system. The degree of defocus was quantified by Matlab. Next, we tried to extend a focal distance with GRIN lens, which was adhered fiber to match both centers. Magnification and a distance from GRIN lens to samples were analyzed. Results: We found that the objective distance was extended 50 μm in water, compared with that in air. With GRIN lens, the distance between GRIN lens and sample was 8 mm in air and 10 mm in water, and get sample's diameter 20 μm. Magnification was 0.23 times without GRIN lens. Conclusion: These results suggest that image fiber with GRIN lens has been potential for obtaining vivid images of fine structures in root canals.
