Influence of Denture Stabilizers to Complete Denture Function

Objectives: A patient purchases denture stabilizers to relieve pain and improve poor denture retention in a drugstore. However, many troubles occur in some cases, because some patients judge and paste denture stabilizers on their denture by themselves. This study evaluated the influence on denture functions, which is caused by the use of denture stabilizer. Materials and methods: Six edentulous subjects participated in the investigation (aged56-83, Mean: 69.5). Polident (PD, Earth Chemical) was used as the cushion type (home-reliner) and New Poli-grip (PG, Earth Chemical) was used as the adhesion type (denture adhesive). The dental prescale occluzer (FPD-705: GC Japan) was used for the measurement of bite force and occlusal contact area. Bite force and occlusal contact area with each material on lower denture were measured after the denture and oral condition were checked. The results were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. Results: The bite force with PD was 56.0N (SD: 46.3). The bite force with PG was 28.3N (SD: 13.6). The bite force of the control was 36.6N (SD: 31.9). The contact area with PD was 0.88mm2 (SD: 0.86). The contact area with PG was 0.40mm2 (SD: 0.21). The contact area of the control was 0.65 mm2 (SD: 0.55).Either bite force or occlusal contact area of the results did not show significant difference (P>0.05). However, comparing these data to the mean of standardized raw scores of six subjects, the bite force and the contact area with PD were bigger than the those of the control. But the contact area of PG was smaller than the that of the control. Conclusion: It was shown that denture functions were influenced by use of the denture adhesive. Accordingly, it is disadvantageous to easy use denture adhesive for denture.
