Development of compound material using apatite fiber with calcium release

Objectives: A compound material that slowly released calcium was experimentally produced as a new functional material for the regeneration of hard tissue. This compound material consisted of a hydroxyapatite fiber (HAp-F) slurry and a measured quantity of calcium carbonate granules. Methods: The granules were then divided into two granule size groups. One granule size was 100 – 350mm (G50) and the other granule size was 75 – 350mm (G60).Next two slurries of calcium carbonate granule and HAp-F were prepared. One slurry had a mass ratio of calcium carbonate that was one time as much as the HA-p, (G5001/G6001).The second slurry has a mass ratio of calcium carbonate that was twice as much as the HA-p, (G5002/G6002).The two slurries were then dried producing a pellet with a 10mm diameter and a 5mm thickness. To elute calcium from each prepared compound each compound was soaked in 30ml of water then 1.4ml/min of distilled water was added to elute out calcium and phosphorous. Results: Immediately after being saturated in water a compound of G50 had the water eluted and the concentration of calcium was sequentially measured over a 24hour period. It was determined that an initial high concentration of 70-80ppm of calcium rapidly decreased during the 24 hour period. In contrast, a compound of G60 had the water eluted and the concentration of calcium was sequentially measured over a 24hour period. It was determined that an initial concentration of 40ppm of calcium slowly decreased during the 24-hour period and followed a curved line .The elution of P from G-60 was measured at a fixed rate of 0.2ppm that appeared to be eluted from the compound matrix. Conclusion: The compound of G60 showed better results with respect to the maintenance of the shape of the pellet and the slow release of the calcium.
