Effects of xylitol gum extracts onto precipitate of hydroxyapatite

Objectives: The effects of two different xylitol gum extracts onto the precipitate of hydroxyapatite were examined. Methods: Two different gums were used in this study, one (A) is containing xylitol, funoran and calcium hydrogen phosphate, the other (B) is xylitol, phosphoryl oligosaccharides of calcium. The gum extracts (0.1g/mL) were prepared with distilled water at 50°C. Apatites were prepared at 80°C in aqueous system having gums extracts and pH values of around 7.5. The precipitates were examined by high resolution trans mission electron microscopy. Results: In containing (A) gum extract experiment the hydroxyapatite were precipitated in well crystallized condition, in containing (B) gum extract, however, the delay of apatite crystals formation and the fine crystals were observed. Conclusions: It may indicate that the differences of precipitated crystals between two batches were caused by the property of phosphoryl oligosaccharides bind to calcium ions more strongly.
