Clinical survey of cervical lesions with the first appointment patients

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between the cervical lesions and age of the patients, brushing methods and bruxism through the clinical survey with the first appointment patients. Methods: we surveyed 209 first appointment patients who had one case or more of the cervical lesions. Evaluation points were (1)age of the patients (2)classification of the cervical lesions (angular and saucer shapes) (3)the way of brushing (4)bruxism. Evaluation points of the way of brushing were (1)frequency of brushing a day (2)handling the tooth brush (3)brushing methods (4)dental paste. Results: The total number of the patients was 209(Male:118, Female:91). The number of the cervical lesions found out were 475 cases of angular shape and 659 cases of saucer shape. The mean number of the cervical lesions in each age group were 1.75 cases(22y`29y), 5.52 cases(30y`39y), 4.58 cases(40y`49y), 6.21 cases(50y`59y), 5.59 cases(60y`69y), and 5.12 cases(70y`83y). From this result, it was recognized that the cervical lesions appeared in the first half of twenties, the mean number increased rapidly in thirties, rose up to the peak in fifties, and decreased gradually followed by missing teeth. With regard to brushing and bruxism, more cases of the cervical lesions were found in the patients who brushed three times or more a day, who brushed vertically and horizontally, who brushed with dental paste, who had a habit of bruxism. Handling the tooth brush did not have a relation to the side of dental arch on which the cervical lesions developed. Conclusions: From this clinical survey, it was suggested that the appearance and the development of the cervical lesions had relations to both brushing and bruxism.
