Anti-adhesion efficiency of Staphylococcus aureus on curcumin polyelectrolyte multilayer films coated acrylic resin discs

Objectives: An acrylic resin obturator is widely used to restore function and esthetics in maxillary defects. However, acrylic resin obturator can accumulate microorganisms resulting in biofilm formation, which is initially a pathogenesis of infections in the oral cavity of immunocompromised or poor oral hygiene patients. Currently, there are many researches to ameliorate anti-microbial properties of acrylic resin. The fabrication of polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) films is one of surface modification techniques using Layer-by-Layer deposition of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. Several data showed good anti-microbial properties of curcumin. However, there is no recent study of curcumin as surface modifying agent on acrylic resin coated via PEM technique. The aim of this study is to examine the inhibitory effect of curcumin coated heat-cured acrylic resin by PEM technique on the adhesion of Staphylococcus aureus.
Methods: The heat-cured acrylic resin discs were prepared and coated with curcumin at concentrations of 0.01, 0.1, 1 and 10 mM by PEM technique. The adhesion of Staphylococcus aureus was examined by adhesion assay and SEM analysis.
Results: The bare acrylic resin samples had significantly more Staphylococcus aureus adhesion than those coated with curcumin at concentration of 0.01, 0.1, 1 and 10 mM. Furthermore, increasing concentrations of curcumin showed a significant reduction in the percentage of Staphylococcus aureus adhesion. Moreover, results from SEM analysis were corresponded to the adhesion assay.
Conclusions: The curcumin coated acrylic resin by PEM technique reduces the adhesion of Staphylococcus aureus and can be further used to reduce infectious complication in patients with maxillary defects.
