The author started the project regarding what are needs for the empowerment of universities of dental medinicine. This project was funded by Ministry of Education through National Research Foundation in Korea. To define the needs, authors conducted face-to-face interviews and document survey. The results of this study have provided useful data for the establishment of future project plans. Also, these results would be helpful to understand the educational situation of another developing countries with similar conditions.

Methods: The survey was done during the middle of July 2017 utilizing all of the teaching staffs and students of universities of dental medicine of Myanmar who participated in this project. The total number of students was 274 and 459, and the staffs was 53 and 81 in Yangon and Mandalay, respectively. Author used Likert scale analysis, preference analysis and multiple response analysis.

Results: The staffs and students of both schools are aware of the necessity of clinical materials, preclinical labs and a lack of manpower in clinical classes. Therefore it is proved that the contents of empowerment project like clinical material support, preclinical staffs training, invited lectures are valid and appropriate. And in both schools they showed the demand for more practical textbook, preclinical labs and radiology department. Thus, authors will consider supporting practical textbooks, preclinical labs and creating radiology department in the future project.

Conclusions: This study proved the validity of the project and showed the direction for the future support. In developing countries, dentistry is especially lagging compared to other medical fields. And university needs more preclinical and clinical training for the competency of students. These supports would be directly connected to the improvement of the people’s oral health condition.
