An in vitro comparison of pH dentin changes following canal dressing among calcium hydroxide paste in combination with propolis, normal saline and a commercial calcium hydroxide paste.

Objectives: The objective of this in vitro study was to compare pH dentin following canal dressing among calcium hydroxide powder in combination with two different vehicles as propolis, normal saline and a commercial calcium hydroxide paste (Endocal®)
Methods: 60 extracted human lower premolar teeth were randomly divided into 3 experimental groups and 1 control group: Group 1 - calcium hydroxide-propolis paste; Group 2 - commercial calcium hydroxide paste (Endocal®); Group 3 - calcium hydroxide-normal saline solution paste and Group 4- control group, in which there was no application of the intracanal medication (15 teeth per group). The pH dentin in the solution was measured after medication at day 0, 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28 to determine the diffusion of hydroxide ion through the dentinal tubules.
Results: The group of commercial calcium hydroxide paste (Endocal®) had a highest mean pH dentin and was different statistically significant (P-value < 0.05) for all groups at day 0, 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28 after canal dressing. But the other groups were not statistically significant different(P-value >0.05). At day 7 after medication, the mean pH dentine for all groups were not different statistically significant (P-value < 0.05) .
Conclusions: The pH dentin in the solution after medication among calcium hydroxide powder in combination with two different vehicles as propolis, normal saline and a commercial calcium hydroxide paste (Endocal®) were not different in 1 week. At 28 days, the commercial calcium hydroxide paste (Endocal®) was highest mean pH dentin.
