CBCT Knowledge and Clinical use Among Israeli Dentists – a Follow-up Study

Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the associations between the age, experience and former education of Israeli dentists on Cone-Beam Computerized Tomography (CBCT) knowledge and clinical use.
Methods: An anonymous survey including demographics, knowledge and usage questions was distributed to Israeli dentists in 4 conferences and via email list.
Results: The study included 387 responders, most (58.1%) were specialists and most (68.5%) were Hadassah graduates. Of these, 93% refer for CBCT with main indications of pre-implants evaluation (64.6%) and impacted third molars (58.1%). Most request cross-sectional images (75.5%) and DICOM files (59.2%). About a third (29.5%) replied that they always read the full scan volume and 61% underwent CBCT reading training. A positive association was found between reading the entire scan volume and CBCT training and the responders’ young age and academic training (p<0.001).The majority (76.7%) passed the knowledge test, with high sore statistically associated with young age (p<0.001) Almost all responders (93.8%) were aware of the possibility of incidental findings, mostly (84.8%) encountered them at least once and most (79.3%) referred them for further consultation. Most (79.6%) showed an interest in a written interpretation report while half (50.6%) believe that a specialist should review the scans. Most (69.3%) were interested in CBCT training, and almost all (91.2%) believe that it should be a pre-purchase requirement.
Conclusions: Compared to our previous study, with limitation of this study’s sample bias, Israeli dentists have improved their knowledge, increased the awareness of incidental findings and the rate of referral for specialist consultation. These findings are probably due to the implementation of CBCT undergraduate training, which is especially apparent in younger dentists. This study highlights the need for improved availability of interpretation services in Israel as well as CBCT post-graduate training among both general practitioners and specialists.
