Effects of Hyaluronic Acid Application on Healing Process After Surgical Treatment of Mandibular Impacted Third Molar

Objectives:
To assess the impact of Hyaluronic acid (HA) application into extraction socket of impacted lower third molar. The use of Hyaluronic acid in Medicine and particularly in dentistry is increasing during the last decade. Hyaluronic acid is a natural cardinal component of the extra cellular matrix and takes part in the process of wound healing. The hypothesis was that HA may have positive effect on wound healing and quality of life

Methods:
A prospective clinical study among patients needed bilateral lower third molar extractions in which 0.2% HA was applied topically at one of the extractions. Clinical parameters were examined at the day of the procedure and a week after. Subjective parameters as VAS (Visual analog scale) and a well-being questionnaire were gathered two days and one week after each extraction.

Results:
The study included 23 participants undergone bilateral lower third molar extractions. Regarding clinical objective parameters, no statistically significant differences were found between the study and the control groups. At the questionnaire there was found a statistically significant difference for two parameters: difficulty at daily activity (3.6 ± 2.5 at the study group vs. 2.2 ± 1.3 at the control group) and the grade of swelling (6.5 ± 2.6 at the study group vs. 4.3 ± 2.3 at the control group).

Conclusions:
The results obtained did not support the study hypothesis regarding the benefit of postoperative symptoms and subjective quality of life indices under the influence of hyaluronic acid. A future study with a larger group of participants, double blind, and a preliminary categorization of lower third molars teeth according to their position might reveal further information regarding the effects of Hyaluronic acid use following lower third molar extractions.
