Integrated Therapy of Sialo-Endoscopy and Intra-Ductal Irrigation of Parotid Glands to Improve Mouth Dryness

Objectives: To assess the additive effect of parotid glands sialo-endoscopy and salivary gland intra-ductal irrigations (IG) on objective improvement of salivary gland secretory dysfunction (SGSD).
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the records of SGSD patients who underwent major salivary gland sialo-endoscopy during 2014–2020. Records included demographics, systemic background, signs and symptoms. Objective improvement was assessed by comparing the mean unstimulated and stimulated whole salivary flow rate (UWSF, SWSF) before and after each procedure.
Results: 200 patients were included with age range 15-83 years (mean age of 59.7 ±13.3 years). We analyzed the repeated measures of the UWSF and SWSF from the baseline point (before IG procedure) to the last point (after endoscopy) using repeated measures. There was a statistically significant difference across UWSF measurements (p= 0.024) and SWSF measurements (p=0.023), and pairwise comparisons demonstrated statically significant differences between the last step and the first step for both UWSF (p=0.037) and SWSF (p= 0.031).
Conclusions: IGs combined with sialo-endoscopies to the major salivary glands possess beneficial objective effects beyond the IG alone and therefore can be applied as an additional therapy tool for SGSD. This study highlights the beneficial effects of sialo-endoscopies in treating patients in novel new indications of severe cases of SGSD.
