Antibiotics - not a Necessity After Drainage of Odontogenic Infections in the Pediatric Population

Objectives: The current standard of care indicates post-operative course of antibiotics for children treated for odontogenic infections. On the other hand, there are reports that this is unnecessary. The aim of this study is to compare outcome of treatment of children treated with post-operative antibiotics to children that were not treated with antibiotics after surgical intervention.

Methods: The current standard of care indicates post-operative course of antibiotics for children treated for odontogenic infections. On the other hand, there are reports that this is unnecessary. The aim of this study is to compare outcome of treatment of children treated with post-operative antibiotics to children that were not treated with antibiotics after surgical intervention.
Results: A total of 411 patients were included in the antibiotics (control) group, while 111 patients were in the non-antibiotics (study) group. The study showed no significant difference between the groups in age, sex distribution, ethnic background as well as blood tests at admission. All but 4 of the patients in the study group showed resolution of their condition post-operatively without any additional antibiotics needed. It was revealed that mean length of hospitalization (LOH) for the study group was similar to the control group – a clinical measure for checking resolution of abscesses. Moreover, only 9% of the patients in the study group had LOH > 3 days, comparing to 12.9% in the control group.
Conclusions: The study and control groups had similar favorable outcome suggesting that post-operative antibiotics are not needed in children with odontogenic infections treated surgically.
