Bacterial growth on titanium versus zirconia healing caps
Objectives: To evaluate and compare the bacterial growth on zirconia versus titanium healing caps using the direct contact test.
Methods: S. sanguis and F. nucleatum growth were tested on a Zirconia healing cap (TAVDental®) (group 1) and a Titanium healing cap, (TAVDental®) (group 2). Eight healing caps from each group were fixed to the cover of a 96-well microtiter plate. Bacterial suspension was placed on each healing cap and the plate was incubated at 370C for 1 hour to allow the suspension fluid to evaporate. Fresh medium was then added to the corresponding wells in the microtiter plate, and the cover holding the healing caps was placed on the plate to enable full immersion of the healing caps. Non-contaminated healing caps samples served as a positive control group. Bacterial growth was monitored spectrophotometrically at 650 nm for 18 hours. Separate plates were used for the 2 different bacteria. ANOVA and Tukey’s comparison tests were used for the statistical analysis.
Results: Significant growth of S. sanguis was observed in both groups with no significant difference compared to the control (P=0.990). However, F. nucleatum demonstrated significantly less bacterial growth in the zirconia group compared to the titanium group (P<0.0001) and compared to the control group (P<0.0001)
Conclusions: Zirconia healing caps may reduce the growth of some bacterial species compared to titanium healing caps
