Dental public Services Uptake by Israeli children

Objectives: To compare dental treatment patterns to children by 4 HMOs in the national health insurance framework.

Methods: Analysis data provided by the HMOs to the Ministry of Health, regarding the service uptake they provided in years 2012-2016.

Results: 25% of the eligible children received treatments in the HMOs in 2012, the percentage increases to 31% in 2016, this trend was in all HMOs, except for one that was 38% in 2013 then decreased to 30% in 2016.
In general, the average number of dental treatments per child decreased from 3.70 to 3.37. The preventive component per treated child increased from 1.48 to 1.61, while the restorative component decreased from 2.54 to 1.75. There was similar trend in HMOs.
Radical treatments was about a quarter of all treatments, these treatments include pulpal therapy, prefabricated stainless steel crowns and extractions. This may reflect the severity of the disease. A slight improvement noticed with time.

Conclusions: Almost in all the HMOs the uptake of dental services by the eligible population increased between 2012–2016, as well as the preventive treatment component. There was no significant difference between the four HMOs. It is expected that the current observed trends will continue in the coming years. The need for dental treatment especially of children high level of disease is met through public health services.
