FACTORS RELATED TO PROFESSIONAL BURNOUT AND JOB SATISFACTION AMONG ISRAELI DENTISTS

Objectives: Objectives: The goal of this study was to examine the levels of professional burnout and professional satisfaction among dentists in Israel.

Methods: Methods: The study included a sample of 196 dentists and a three-part questionnaire with multiple choice questions relating to:
1) Personal and professional background, 2) Burnout components and 3) professional satisfaction.

Results: Results: High burnout levels were found among respondents vs those reported in the literature. (An average 3.9, 2.3 and 3.0 for emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and diminished personal accomplishment, respectively, on a 1 to 7 scale). A total 20.4% of the dentists were considered at high risk for burnout, 13.8% were considered at low risk and 2.6% were found to be at very high risk. The average job satisfaction was 3.0, on a 1 to 5 scale. Depersonlization was the only demographic variable in which gender influenced burnout, male dentists displaying higher levels than women . Emotional exhaustion was negatively correlated with specialty training, fewer working hours, additional positions, self-employment and certain dental schools. Aside from gender, depersonalization was negatively correlated with specialty training status, fewer working hours and self-employment. Diminished personal accomplishment was negatively correlated with fewer working hours, additional positions, hobbies, other degrees and certain dental schools. Job satisfaction was correlated significantly with the participant having academic degrees additional to a DMD.

Conclusions: Conclusions: To help cope with potential future burnout dentists, should be encouraged to continue their studies, man additional positions besides general dentistry, such as in research and teaching or take on managerial positions in addition to developing hobbies. The correlation between burnout and professional satisfaction to professional status, should be a major consideration in the dentist's career choices.
