Posterior composites and post-operative pain

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of chlorohexidine on Post-operative sensitivity following posterior composite restorations by examining dental sensitivity 24 hours, 1 week, and 1 month after performing the restoration.

Methods: After the approval of Helsinki Committee, 40 teeth with Class I and Class 2 were selected and randomly assigned into two groups; Chlorohexidine treated group and control group. After preparing the teeth, and before placing the restorations, in the Chlorohexidine treated group a small cotton ball was soaked in Chlorohexidine 0.2% and placed in the cavity for 30 seconds. In the control group, the same procedure was conducted using Saline instead of Chlorohexidine. All patients were then contacted by phone postoperatively after 24 hours, they were questioned about presence or absence of postoperative sensitivity. If sensitivity was reported, patients were asked to specify the intensity of sensitivity according to an ordinal pain rating scale from 0 to 10. Later after a week and a month, the patient was asked to fill a questionnaire about the intensity of sensitivity after the restoration. At the end of the study the data had been collected and passed through statistical analysis chi-square test, and Mann Whitney test (Mann-Whitney U test) (α = .05).

Results: Evaluation at a 1-week after restorative treatment revealed that, 100% of the restorations in the Chlorhexidine treated group didn’t show any sign of postoperative sensitivity whereas 20% did from the control group (p<0.05). Evaluation at 24 hours and one month after restorative treatment revealed no statistically significant differences between the Chlorhexidine treated group and the control group.

Conclusions: Chlorhexidine 0.2% decreases postoperative sensitivity of posterior teeth restored by composite resin material.
