Satisfaction from obturator following maxillectiomy- a pilot study

Objectives: Maxilla resection is a debilitating procedure that often associates with large bone defect and communication between the oral, nasal and sinus cavities. One of the most common techniques to restore this defect is to use a removable denture (Obturator).
The goal of this study was to evaluate patients' satisfaction from obturator after maxilla resection.

Methods: The study included patients in the department of Maxillo-facial rehabilitation, Rambam health care campus. The patients were treated by a prosthodontist and received final obturator six-eight months after maxillectomy. All patients were visiting the department for maintenance care and follow-up and were asked to fill a VAS- scale questioner regarding their satisfaction from the obturator, function, phonetic and esthetic (score ranged from 0 to 10). Furthermore, patients were asked to grade (1-3) their self-confidence and family-confidence.

Results: 13 patients were enrolled in the study, 3 women and 10 men by the age of 41 year to 82 years, mean age 68±12.34 years. Patients' general satisfaction from the obturator was relatively high (5.92 ±3.25). Highest scores were reported for aesthetic (6.84±3.02), followed by phonetics (6.61±2.29) with the lowest satisfaction from the obturator's function (5.66 ±2.38). Self and family confidences were moderate (2±0.57, 1.92±0.49 respectively).

Conclusions: Within the limits of this pilot study, general satisfaction from obturator is acceptable. However, the functional aspect of the obturator does not meet patient's expectation and needs to be improved; while phonetics and aesthetics satisfaction were relatively high.
