Dental trauma prevalence among IDF recruits, an epidemiological study

Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence of dental trauma among IDF recruits
Methods: The study was a cross sectional clustered randomised survey. Subjects were recruited to the study at their first day of military service. Subjects completed a questionnaire for personal and demographic data including: age, place of birth, residence information, education, medical status and current smoking status. Then subjects underwent clinical evaluation for dental trauma in 4 upper incisors (teeth no.12-22) by 5 calibrated clinicians using standard office chair with office mixed with natural window illumination. No radiographic evaluation was included in the current study. Univariate analysis included Chi square, and a linear regression were conducted
Results: A total of 702 subjects were included in the study, 58.4% were males. Their mean age was 19.03±0.65 years, 91.3% of the participants were born in Israel. Most of the participants (79.4%) had finished high school and were eligible for a matriculation certificate.
23.2% of all subjects had dental trauma injuries at some level. Male had significantly higher percentages of dental trauma with 30.4% vs. 13.2% among female (p<0.001). Level of education and age were not associated with dental trauma. Gender was also the only variable which reached statistical significance as a predictor of dental trauma with an OR of 3.18
Conclusions: Dental trauma is a major public health problem with physical, psychological and aesthetic influences. These survey results demonstrated that gender was related to the prevalence of TDI, while other factors were not significantly associated to TDI.
