Job satisfaction among young dentists in Israel - a qualitative study

Objectives:
To assess the general job satisfaction of young dentists who work both in private and public clinics To define what are the factors influencing occupation satisfaction. Suggest a theoretical model that will help raise young dentists job satisfaction, an improvement that will serve these dentists but at the same time will serve both the patients and the entire dental health system in Israel.

Methods:
This Qualitative study was based on five semi-structures interviews with young dentists who graduated dental school after June 2010 and work in both public and private clinics. The sample was convenience sample using interrupted snowball method. The recorded interviews were transcribed and assessed for conclusions using qualitative methods of analysis. Using the results we assumed a theoretical model for improving the occupational satisfaction of the young dentist based on Judge T.A. et al (2001).

Results:
Dentists were satisfied from their career choice. Job satisfaction is better in the private sector. Financial compensation and personal time are crucial factors influencing job satisfaction. Young dentists would like support and guidance.

Conclusions:
This study showed, in accordance with the literature, that the young dentists interviewed were generally satisfied with their job. However, in comparison between the public and private sector, there are some crucial factors that decrease job satisfaction. The main factors were inserted into the suggested model which describes the two-way connection between job satisfaction and job performance.
