?Does handedness of clinicians influence implant position and angulation

Objectives: Dental implant angulation is important for the prosthesis longevity, esthetic and implant survival. Therefore, the aim of the study was to examine if handedness of clinicians affect the angulation of the implants placed in the ipsi/contralateral side
Methods: This retrospective pilot study was performed on panoramic radiographs of 63 patients that were treated in the department of Periodontology in Rambam during 2013-2016. 171 Implants were inserted free-hand by three clinicians (E.M Left-handed, H.Z & Y.M right handed). In order to calculate implant angulation, an occlusal line and the long axis of the implant was drawn and the mesial angle between these lines was measured.
Unpaired t-test was used to calculate the differences between angulation of implants that were performed on right and left sides of the jaw by the three clinicians.
Results: For Y.M, 8 implants were examined on the right and 7 on the left with mean angulation of 92.01±6.36 and 96.71±8.83 respectively (p=0.0096). For H.Z, 30 implants were examined on the right and 21 on the left with mean angulation of 99.08±8.91and 95.58±10.28 respectively (p=0.073). For E.M, 56 implants were examined on the left and 40 on the right with mean angulation of 97.38±7.72 and 98.24±8.13 respectively (p=0.119).
According to the results, there is no significant difference in implant’s angulation between the ipsi and contralateral side of every clinician
Conclusions: Within the limits of our study, the handedness of a clinician doesn't affect implant angulation
