Stress and Anxiety as Impact Factors for Oral Parafunction and Bruxism

Objectives: a. to determine the prevalence of bruxism (awake -AB and sleep bruxism -SB) among Israeli adolescents, in relation to sex and psychological factors. b. to determine if there is a relationship between the prevalence of oral parafunction activity and bruxism, and stress and anxiety levels among Israeli adolescents in relation to sex and psychological factors. c. to determine if there is a relationship between the prevalence of parafunctional activity to stress and anxiety levels among Israeli adolescents, in relation to sex and psychological factors.
Methods: The research took place in Israeli high schools, geographically covering the south, center, north, and east of Israel. The population included 2634 high school students at age 14-18y. The research design was based on an anonymous online questionnaire concerning items related to oral parafunction activity ,AB and SB, anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder Assessment questionnaire) and stress (Perceived- Stress Scale).
Results: Psychological factors were found significantly related to SB and AB, as well as with the performance of parafunctional activities. The total prevalence of SB found was 20.0% in the total study population (girls 24.1% ; boys 15.4% p <0.0001, Fisher's Exact Test). The total prevalence of AB is 31.1% with no significant difference between thr sexes. A statistically significant relation was found between SB stress, and anxiety (p< 0.001, Pearson Chi-Square), and between AB stress and anxiety (p<0.001., Pearson Chi-Square). It was also found a statistically significant relation between stress and parafunctional activity (p<0.001, Pearson Chi-Square) as well as between anxiety and parafunctional activity (p<0.001, Pearson Chi-Square).
Conclusions: Parafunctional activities as well as sleep and awake bruxism may be considered markers of psychological disturbance in adolescents. Pedagogues should pay attention to pupils performing those activities.
