Evaluation Of Teeth Preparations For Complete Crown On Manikin-Mounted Typodont

Objectives: Pre-graduate students have been trained for tooth preparation for crown restoration during the fourth year. students prepare a premolar and a molar teeth for crown restoration using the main principles of preparation.
The objectives of this study are: 1. to evaluate the performance of student’s preparation during the fourth year in dentistry comparing the first molar preparation to the premolar preparation. 2. To identify which principle of the preparation is the most difficult for the students.
Methods: : 203 preparations were examined, which were carried out by 107 students. preparations were examined by instructors from the Department of Prosthodontics, each preparation was evaluated by two different instructors, and were given scores from 0-100 for each of the six principles of preparation : occlusal reduction, finish line, buccal reduction, lingual reduction, convergence angle, damage to adjacent teeth
Results: The results showed that the preparations of the premolar teeth were better than the preparation of the molars, showing improvement in their manual skills during the year. The students have more difficulty performing occlusal reduction and finish line comparing to the other criteria.
Conclusions: : The main criteria in which students have difficulty are occlusal reduction and finish line, however it is evident that the results of the student’s preparation for maxillary premolar, which was done later during the year were better. The results showed gradual improvement of students manual skills and gives us an hint about the criteria that need more instructions and practicing to improve students teeth preparation.
