Dental treatment and management under general anesthesia in DiGeorge syndrome
Objectives: DiGeorgesyndrome was described in 1968 by the pediatric endocrinologist Angelo DiGeorge The classic triad of features of DiGeorge syndrome (also known as chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome) on presentation is conotruncal cardiac anomalies, hypoplastic thymus, and hypocalcemia (resulting from parathyroid hypoplasia). The aim of the report to introduce a case of DiGeorge syndrome, the preoperative management and dental care management. Methods: A 14-year-old female with DiGeorge syndrome was referred to our department for dental treatment. At dental examination, hypertelorism, a short philtrum, severe enamel hypoplasia and generalized tooth decay were noted. Medical examination of the patient had disclosed heart and aortic arch malformations, hirschsprung disease and asthma. Most of which are present as part of DiGeorge syndrome According to this, special considerations and preparations were to be taken before entering a general anesthesia in a purpose of dental treatment. Results: After meticulous arrangements, our patient introduced to dental treatment under general anesthesia, in which we performed several and various dental procedures, from calculus removal and dental restorations to multiple extractions. All of which were completed successfully, despite the challenging connotative conditions. Conclusions: Because DiGeorge syndrome can result in so many disorders, a number of specialists should be involved in diagnosing specific conditions, recommending treatments and providing care. It is important to emphasize that even after an overall medical examination and total medical history information; these patients are steel concluded to be in a moderate to high- risk for treatments under general anesthesia.
