Effect Of GTR In Osseous Healing Following Surgical Endodontic Treatment

Objectives: To evaluate the influence of application of anorganic bovine bone (ABB, Cerabone®) and a resorbable membrane (Osseoguard®, OSG) on formation of bone and cementum following surgical endodontic treatment in cats. Methods: Following induction of apical periodontitis and root canal treatment, endodontic surgery was performed on 72 roots of first and second maxillary molars of 9 cats. The bone defects were covered with ABB + membrane (ABBM), ABB only, a membrane only (MEM), or were left unfilled (control). Histomorphometry on non-decalcified sections was performed at 3 and 6 months post surgery to analyze new bone (NB) and new cementum (CEM) formation. Results: Bone formation was greater at the ABBM than the ABB sites at each period (p<0.05). At 6 months, NB at MEM sites was greater than in ABBM sites (p = 0.021). Formation of new cementum was significantly greater at 6 months than at 3 months at both grafted sites (ABBM, ABB)(p<0.05). CEM was also significantly greater at the ABBM than in ABB sites at 6 months (p = 0.042). Conclusion: There was significantly more bone formation following surgical endodontic treatment when a membrane and a bone graft were used, as compared to bone grafts alone or unfilled control sites.
