Four-Year Results Following Surgery with Bio-Oss Collagen and Bio-Gide PERIO

Background: Treatment of intrabony defects with Bio-Oss Collagen® and BioGide Perio® (Geistlich, Wolhusen, Switzerland) has been shown to significantly improve the outcome of regenerative surgery. Until now there are no data on the long-term clinical results following this treatment modality. Aim: To present the 4-year clinical results following treatment of intrabony defects with Bio-Oss Collagen® and BioGide Perio®. Materials and Methods: Twenty two patients with advanced chronic periodontitis and each of whom displayed one deep intrabony defect, were consecutively treated. Clinical parameters were evaluated prior to and at 1 and 4 years after treatment. The primary outcome variable was CAL. Results: No adverse healing response was observed in any of the patients. Mean PD was reduced from 8.3 ± 1.5 mm to 2.9 ± 1.3 mm (p<0.0001) at 1 year and measured 3.3 ± 1.1 mm (p<0.0001) at 4 years. Mean CAL changed from from 9.4 ± 1.3 mm to 5.3 ± 1.5 mm (p<0.0001) at 1 year and 5.7 ± 1.5 mm (p<0.0001) at 5 years No statistical significant differences were found between any of the investigated parameters at 1 and 4 years postoperatively. Conclusion: The findings suggest that the results obtained with Bio-Oss Collagen® and BioGide Perio® can be maintained over a period of 4 years.
