Antibacterial activity of some bonding agents, composites, compomers and glassionomers

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare antibacterial activity of some dentin bonding agents, composites, compomers and glass ionomers. Methods: Restorative material discs were made of each of compomer (Ionosite), composites (Z250 and Admira caps) and glass-ionomers (Riva Pink, Riva Bleach and Vitre Bond) using a cylindrical mold (4mm × 9mm). After setting and light curing, 1mm tick discs were prepared. Dental bonding agent (Biscover, Clearfil Protect Bond, OneCoat SE Bond and Clearfil S3 Bond) discs were made by pipeting out 15µl portion of each material onto sterile paper discs (6mm) and light cured. For preparing uncured dental bonding agents, discs, paper discs were placed on the inoculated agar surface. A 15µl of each test substance (individual ingredients and mixture of them) were pipetted onto these paper discs. Antibacterial activity of each material (triplicate) was evaluated against Streptococcus mutans NCTC10449, Actinomyces viscocus FDCT14 and Prophyromonas gingivalis ATCC33277. After 2 to 7 days incubation, the diameter of each of zone of inhibition (including the diameter of the disk) was measured. A 0.2% aqueous solution of chlorhaxidine 0.9% saline served as positive and negative controls respectively. Results: Among restorative materials antibacterial activity was observed for Z250 and Admira caps against Prophyromonas gingivalis and for Vitre Bond against the three bacteria. All the light cured bonding agents were active agaings Prophyromonas gingivalis. Clearfil Protect Bond and OneCoat SE Bond were only active against Streptococcus mutans. Except for Biscover all the materials were active against Actinomyces viscocus. For the ingredients, all ingredients of Biscover, Clearfil Protect Bond, OneCoat SE Bond and Clearfil S3 Bond were active against all the bacteria except for adhesive ingredient of Clearfil Protect Bond against Streptococcus mutans. Conclusion: As only Clearfil Protect Bond and OneCoat SE Bond were active against all the three bacteria their use is suggested.
