Development of patient simulation system: Investigation of GUI system

Objectives: In Nippon Dental University, we developed a simulation system linked with the patient's sensation for application to the training of dentists in holistic medicine. In this study, the Graphical User Interface (GUI) we developed for the drive of the robot in this project plan is reported. Methods: Based on the results of a questionnaire (9 items + free description) on training using a head simulation model (NDU-1) we developed, a simulation model (NDU-2) unified with a dental treatment unit was developed. For the drive of NDU-2, GUI was developed using “Microsoft Visual C++ 8.0”. Results: The development of GUI linked with various measurement apparatuses allowed the instant and accurate operation of NDU-2 to control patient burden. Additional operations considered necessary by the rater could be performed at any time. Scenarios appropriate for training contents could be produced and displayed on the GUI screen, which facilitated GUI operation and training by the rater. In addition, NDU-2's reactions recorded in a series of training and evaluation data on trainees using an external camera were stored in the folder of GUI for each trainee and could be fed back to trainees at any time for reflection on their results. Conclusion: The application of GUI in the operation of the simulation model (NDU-2) improved the usefulness of the model compared with the conventional one for both trainees and instructors. In the future, many scenarios appropriate for various training contents should be produced.
