Objectives: The study was designed to investigate how the periodontal disease treatment with Emdogain may influence the parameters of serum acute phase response and the total antioxidant status (TAS) of nonstimulated saliva. Material and methods:The process of wound healing after periodontal treatment provided with EMP and regular open flap procedure was observed in 28 patients (14 male and 14 female aged 23-62) before and five years after clinical procedure. In each patient, one intrabony periodontal defect was treated with EMP, while the contralateral defect was treated with open flap procedure. The periodontal condition of the participants was clinically assessed by probing pocket depths and attachment loss. The extent of alveolar bone loss was recorded radiographicaly.Changes in serum concentrations of acute phase response AGP,ACT,CRP were recorded twice at the beginning of experiment and after five years using rocket immunoelectrophoresis. TAS was measured in nonstimulated whole saliva using tests of Randox. In the statistical analyses differences were compared using Student-t-test, Kruskal-Wellis and Dunns nonparametric tests. Results:The probing pocket depth varied from 3,91 mm (1,1-11) before treatment to 1,27 (1,1-3,5 ) after it in EMP group and from 3,83 mm and 0,98 in the control group.Medium attachment loss at baseline and 5 years post surgery varied from 3,2 2,4 mm in EMP group and from 2,70 2,2 in the control group. Statistical significance between I and II examination at p<0,01 and p<0,001. Conclusion:In our study we can confirm the good results of periodontal treatment with Emdogain and classical methods. The differences are not statistically significant but it's a better tendency in EMP treated part of periodontium. The biochemical study confirms a tendency to decreased intensity of the inflammatory disease after treatment.
