Objectives: To perform visual evaluation of a new shade guide designed primarily for monitoring tooth whitening and to compare this shade guide with two commercial shade guides.
Methods: Tab arrangement of three shade guides [prototype of new VITA Bleachedguide 3D-Master (BG, Vita), value scale of Vitapan Classical (VC, Vita) and color-ordered Trubyte Bioform porcelain shade guide (TB, Dentsply)] was evaluated (n=3). The BG tabs scattered in random order were visually reordered from the lightest to the darkest by 15 evaluators under controlled conditions of viewing booth. In addition, evaluators graded three shade guides using 1-5 scale (strongly disagree to strongly agree). Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test was used for comparison of % wrong decisions.
Results: Visually determined BSG order was found to be identical to the order given by manufacturer. This was not the case with two other products: visual and manufacturers' orders were identical for 7 of 16 VC tabs and 9 of 24 TB tabs. Grades for three shade guides are given in the table.

BG-VC and BG-TB comparisons of % wrong decisions showed significantly lower values for BG (p<0.001).
Conclusion: Visually determined lightest to darkest order of BG was identical to manufacturer-suggested order. The survey showed BG was more user-friendly as compared to VC and TB. These findings support the use of new VITA Bleachedguide 3D-Master for monitoring of tooth whitening. Supported in part by Vita Zahnfabrik
