Oral Lichen Planus and Dental Implants-a Retrospective Study

Objectives: To test the hypothesis that 1.There is no difference in the success rate of dental implants placed in Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) patients compared to healthy individuals. 2. Disease manifestations in treated OLP patients are not altered by implant-borne prostheses Methods: Histopathologically diagnosed OLP patients, under treatment in the oral medicine department,. with (the study group) and without (control group) dental implants were entered into the study. All patients underwent a clinical examination and their clinical dental records were assessed. Every 6-month the clinical findings (LP type, number of regions involved and improvement/worsening clinical appearance), symptoms (VAS, patients complain) type and extent of treatment (medications, frequency of treatment) of OLP were recorded. Pocket depth, mobility, bleeding on probing, redness, pain and radiolucency around the implants were also assessed. Follow up ranged from 6 month to two years. Ordinal variables and VAS score were compared using the Mann Whitney test. The significance of the trend within each of the groups was assed using the Friedman test. Categorical variables were compared using Pearson Chi square test and the Fisher's exact test. Results: 14 patients in the study group and 15 in the control group were included (total N=29). Average age was 59 in both groups and M:F ratios were 3:11,6:9 respectively. No implant failures were recorded. Comparison between the manifestations of OLP in the study and the control groups did not reveal any significant differences. Conclusions: The success of dental implants in treated OLP patients does not seem to be different from the success rate in the general population. The results from this study support the hypothesis that dental implants have no influence on the manifestations of OLP.
