Temporomandibular and Dental Signs among Patients Suffering from Eating Disorders
Objective: To evaluate differences in dental erosions and temporomandibular signs and symptoms among women suffering from chronic eating disorders compared to a gender matched, random control group. Material and Methods: The prevalence of temporomandibular disorders among 79 young women (average age 23.46) suffering from chronic eating disorders was compared to a gender matched, random control group of 48 women (average age 24.58). Clinical examinations and detailed questionnaires were used to collect data regarding the physical and psychological status of the women. Mental parameters were recorded according to the Axis II of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders. Results: The percentage of women who suffered from dental erosions was significantly higher in the study group compared to the control group (p<0.001). Complaints regarding tooth sensitivity were significantly higher in the study group compared to the control group (p=0.023). Sensitivity of the masticatory muscles to palpation was significantly higher in the study group (p<0.001). Women in the study group reported more difficulty in mouth opening (p=0.04). The degrees of depression and anxiety were significantly higher in the study group compared to the control group (p<0.001). Conclusion: In light of the growing prevalence of eating disorders and their potentially severe impact on oral health, it is important for the dentist to be acquainted with the common presentations, since the dentist may be the first health professional to detect an undiagnosed case.
