Caries Prevalence in 4-years-old from Ethiopian origin in Israel

Waves of Immigration of Ethiopian Jews to Israel started in 1984 and are still going on. This community is more then 80,000 people now in Israel. Dental health of children from Ethiopian origin in Israel has been shown to deteriorate after their arrival.

Objectives: To monitor caries prevalence and treatment needs of Ethiopy community children.

Material and methods: 3-4 year old children were examined in 6 kindergartens in Rechovoth according to WHO protocol. All children of Ethiopian origin in this age group visiting kindergartens were examined.

Results: 103 children were examined. The mean dmf(t) was 6.29±4.98. Caries free proportion was 20.4%. There were no filled teeth or missing teeth due to caries. 54% had had traditional deciduous canine extraction.

Conclusions: Caries experience is especially high and rising in this population. There is urgent need for dental health promotion program directed to parents and toddlers in this community. It is also essential to provide dental treatment to these children.
