Root shape definition - Is it a Myth or real

According to the literature, root shape especially blunt or pipette, as seen on a periapical film (PA) before orthodontic treatment, are more vulnerable to orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR). Objectives: to find the presence of an agreement in the definition of root shape among different examiners. Materials and Methods: Nine examiners analyzed ninety one pairs of upper incisors PA film taken prior to and following orthodontic treatment. Each examiner was asked to mark twice on a special image one of 5 different shapes namely: normal, short, blunt, bent or pipette. Results: the Kappa values for the shape definitions of the same examiner as well as the Kappa values between the examiners were under the acceptable statistical value. Conclusion: According to this study the ability to define the root shape from a PA film is not reliable.
