An International Survey of Teaching in Undergraduate Endodontology

Objectives: To evaluate national and international trends in teaching of root canal treatment;
To evaluate the trends in teaching of root canal retreatment worldwide;
To evaluate staffing ratios and demographics for undergraduate teaching in Endodontology.
Methods: An online survey was developed and piloted. Ethical approval was granted by the Social Research Ethics Committee (SREC) at University College Cork (Log 2021-034). 119 undergraduate Endodontology leads worldwide were identified and contacted via email inviting them to participate in this online survey. Data was then analysed by region.
Results: Responses were recieved from 52/119 schools invited to participate (Response Rate of 43.7%). UK & Ireland Schools: 56% teach students using extracted teeth, 94% use 3D printed teeth and 18.75% use haptics compared to respndent schools in the rest of the world (ROW) of which 77% use extracetd teeth, 70% use 3D printed teeth and 5.5% use haptics. Dental Schools in UK & Ireland teach significantly more root canal re-treatment (31.35% single rooted, 43.75% single and multi-rooted ) compared with Schools in the rest of the world. 44% of Schools in UK & Ireland teach rotational rotary preparation only compared to 64% in ROW, 50% teach rotational and reciproacal comapred to 22% in ROW and 6% teach rotational only compared with 11% in ROW. Dental Schools in UK & Ireland, Europe and Australia/New Zealand are heavily dependent on General Dental Practitioners for undergraduate endodontic teaching (40-50%) whilst in USA/Canada the majority of undergraduate teaching in Endodontology is delivered by specialists.
Conclusions: 3D printed teeth are playing a significant role in pre-clinical endodontic teaching worldwide whilst extracted teeth still play an importnat role. Haptics play a minor role in undergrdauate endodontic training.Teaching in root canal re-treatment plays a more significant role in undegraduate education in UK & Ireland compared to ROW. Teaching in rotary root canal preparation is comparable worldwide whilst the demongraphics of staff teaching undergraduates varies significntly between US & Canada where specilaists provide the majority of teaching compared with a majority of General Dental Practitioners in other regions.
