The development of a procedural skills training video for dental undergraduates utilizing validated performance metrics for a posterior Class II composite restoration

Objectives: To utilize validated performance metrics for the Class II posterior composite restoration to develop a procedural video that can be used to enhance pre-clinical operative training for dental undergraduates
Methods: A Metrics Group consisting of 4 experienced Consultants in Restorative Dentistry, an experienced member of staff from the Restorative Dentistry department in CUDSH and a senior behavioural scientist and education/training expert deconstructed the performance of the Class II posterior composite resin restoration and defined performance metrics. At a modified Delphi meeting, 20 experts in the field of Restorative Dentistry from 11 different International Dental Institutions critiqued these metrics and their operational definitions before reaching consensus. The resulting metrics were subsequently used to guide the development of a captioned procedural video for pre-clinical training of dental undergraduates. The video was developed in collaboration with the UCC Academy video team.
Results: Following the Delphi panel meeting a total of 15 Phases, 46 Steps, 37 Errors and 43 Critical errors were identified, modified and validated. The operative skills training video (for a Class II composite restoration in the mesial of the 14) produced was guided by the Phases and Steps metrics. The video is 13 minutes and 48 seconds long. In the video, the operator performs the procedure on a phantom head using a custom-designed 3D printed typodont with a mesial carious lesion. The video is captioned using the exact wording of the validated performance metrics as agreed by the Delphi panel.
Conclusions: This procedural skills training video serves as a useful tool for the teaching of a Class II posterior composite restoration. The use of metrics can enhance the training process and allow trainees to engage in more deliberate practice.
