Novel Applications of Robots in Major Professional Fields of Dentistry
Abstract: Introduction: With the rapid advancement of technology, robotics has entered the medical field and become a popular research area. The aim of this study was to introduce the novel application of robots in several major professional fields of dentistry. Methods & Materials: Reported studies from the 2020 to 2023 on the novel applications of robots in major professional fields of dentistry were identified from electronic databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar and Scopus. After reviewing and analyzing them, the relevant studies were selected for this review article. Results: The results of 13 studies indicate that today robots can be used in various aspects of dentistry, such as prosthodontics, orthodontics, oral implantology, endodontics, and oral surgery. Currently, various types of efficient robots in the fields of tooth preparation, tooth arrangement, articulation, drilling, tooth cleaning and oral implantology facilitate the dentist's work. Also in the field of orthodontics, there are robots such as orthodontic archwire-bending robots that meet clinical needs. Conclusion: During the last decade, the application of robots in dentistry has developed more precise dental treatments and made them less invasive. In the near future, robots will change diagnostics and treatment protocols in dental medicine and lead new directions for further development.
