Evaluation of the antibacterial effect of Ascophyllum nodosum algae and Peppermint extracts with chlorhexidine on Streptococcus sabinus (in-vitro)

The aim of this study was to investigate the microbial effects of Peppermint and Ascophyllum nodosum extracts on Streptococcus sobrinus. In this study, disk diffusion test was used to investigate the antibacterial potential of the extracts by measuring the diameter of the inhibition zone. In the second part of the study, for evaluation of minimum inhibitory concentration of bacteria (MIC) both Microdilution broth and Macro dilution broth method was used and for measuring the minimum bactericidal concentration of bacteria (MBC) blood agar dilution method was adopted. Each experiment repeated 3 times. The overall results of the inhibition test showed that all the extracts had a positive inhibitory effect on Streptococcus sobrinus and the bacteria did not show any resistance to any of them. In peppermint group, the etherdopetrol extract, had the highest amount of inhibition zone. In the Ascophyllum nodosum alga group, the aqueous-acidic extract of AN alga had the highest amount. Of all the studied groups, however, CHX had the highest value for this amount. As a result, the aqueous-acidic and ethanolic extracts of AN algae and ethyl acetate and etherdopetrol extract of peppermint have a good bacteriostatic effect. In the logarithm of MBC, CHX has a significant difference with chloroform extract of peppermint. As a result, the aqueous-acidic and ethanolic extract of AN algae and ethyl acetate and etherdopetrol extract of peppermint have a good antibactericidal effect.According to the results, the aqueous-acidic and ethanolic extract of Ascophyllum nodosum algae and ethyl acetate and etherdopetrol extract extracts of peppermint, showed their bacteriostatic and bactericidal effect on Streptococcus sobrinus bacteria.)P value was 0.030 for MIC of methanolic extract of algae and 0.012 for MIC of chloroform extract of peppermint and 0.013 for MBC of chloroform extract of peppermint).
