Assessment of the PaO2/SpO2 in Patients Undergoing Maxillomandibular Fixation

Objectives:

Maxillomandibular fixation is one of the most prevalent procedures of the maxillomandibular surgeries. This study was conducted to evaluate the partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) and oxygen saturation (SpO2) in patients undergoing maxillomandibular fixation, using pulse oximetere.

Methods: In this descriptive study, 40 patients undergoing the maxillomandibular fixation were selected. Mean age of the study population was 26.1 years, 67.5 percent of which were male and 32.5% were female. PaO2 was evaluated with respect to O2sat. The probe of pulse oximetere was fixed on left pointing finger for 36 hours. In case of decreasing O2sat below 90% unit hypoxia was recorded. Also, oxygenation of arteries was recorded for duration of 10 min in intervals of 1, 5 and 36 hours and minimum of SpO2 during every 2 minutes was fixed.

Results: Hypoxemic episodes occurred in 30 (86%) of the patients. Mean of PaO2 was 58.6 and mean of SpO2 was 94.1+3.0%.

Conclusions:

The majority of patients suffered from the hypoxic episodes. It is recommended to study the route to decrease the hypoxemic episodes after maxillomandibular fixation in future studies.
